Little Dang Dog

(Kevin Carlson)
OK, so I have had this dog since she was 6 weeks old, and when she was a puppy, I spent may hours chasing her around, trying to get her back in the house or yard. She's a beagle mix, beagles being a breed that I've been told have their brain located in their nose, and I completely believe it. One evening, she got a whiff of something exciting and dug under the fence into my neighbor's yard. She then sat outside the fence barking because she couldn't figure out how to get back. I was so frustrated with her, that after getting her back in the house, I picked up my guitar and this song just sort of happened. She sat right there and watched me the whole time I was writing it. I think she knew it was about her!

I got a little dang dog
Wakes me in the mornin’ with her cryin’
I got a little dang dog
Gettin’ out my fence or at least she’s tryin’

They said she was part beagle
And I will admit she’s cute
But I think I’ve got a scoundrel
In a little furry suit

[chorus]
She don’t know her name from Adam
If someone moves she’s barkin’ at ‘em
Drives me crazy, drives me nuts
I took her to a trainer and they said
Man is this here dog a pain or what? And I said,
“Hey! I love that mutt.”

I got a little dang dog
I swear she’s smiles at me when she’s been bad (Oh, I’ve been had)
I got a little dang dog
Can’t spend time around her and be sad

Go outside to get the paper
And the mail’s communiqués
Come back in her tail is waggin’
Like I’ve been gone for days

[chorus]
She don’t know her name from Adam
If someone moves she’s barkin’ at ‘em
Drives me crazy, drives me nuts
I took her to a trainer and they said
Man is this here dog a pain or what? And I said,
“Hey! I love that mutt.”

I got a little dang dog (yes, I do)
I got a little dang dog
I got a little dang dog
