Bethany's Wood
(Kevin Carlson)
Just a song about simpler times that weren't that long ago. In my childhood no one thought anything about letting the kids go play outside all day as long as they were "home by dark". Over time, the woods were cleared and new homes and business were built in their place. Unfortunately, it seems that as we lost the landscape we lost some of our innocence as well. The great thing is that all the stories and memories of playing without a care in the world are still alive and well.
Down at the end of the road I grew up on
A thousand acres
Bethany's Wood, where my friends and I could go and play
For hours
Named for a girl who was lost in that world
Like a ray of sunshine
Alive on the wings of each breeze as it springs from the heart
Of Bethany's Wood
We'd hide in the treehouse, still like a church mouse
And share our secrets
And dream that we'd be, all grown up and free
From our fears
I've come to learn, that I can't return
And I can't go forward
Stuck in my mind, are the secrets that bind me now still
To Bethany's Wood
I wish I was there
I'd trade it all in for a breath of that air
And one moment lost in time
How free were we?
Free to be young but still too young to see
That our life was simply good
Down in Bethany's Wood
One day they came in, bulldozers and men
To raze the hillside
And level the ground, her canopy came crashing down
Like thunder
Seems we lost her again to the progress of men
They don't understand
Her soul is entwined with the thoughts that remind
Us of days in Bethany's Wood
I wish I was there
I'd trade it all in for a breath of that air
And one moment lost in time
How free were we?
Free to be young but still too young to see
That our life was simply good
Down in Bethany's Wood
