Miracle
(Kevin Carlson)
Several years ago, I visited a relative in a hospice. When I arrived, he was talking with his daughter, with whom he had always had a strained relationship. It was clear that they were trying to "work out" a lifetime of problems and misunderstandings, both hoping for something that neither expected to receive. The song itself, didn't come to me right away. It was several months later, after I had really absorbed the impact of what I had briefly witnessed that the idea for Miracle developed. This was the first song written for the Museum CD.
She cries gently into the arms
Of a dying old man
He holds on to the daughter he knew
But did not understand
They'd like to get past this but how?
Time won't turn back for them now
He remembers her as a child
She was pretty and sad
She remembers being afraid
Of the man she called Dad
Now all they have is regret
This they won’t ever forget
As he lays there
Dying
She needs a miracle
To help her receive what she always believed
Her life should have been as a child
He needs a miracle
To help him forget his deepest regret
That he never taught his little girl to
Smile
She'd give anything just to back and try childhood again
He relives all his mistakes feels like he just can’t win
Living on pride 'til the world brings you down to your knees
Ignoring the pain of the past, the hurt and the pleas
Please make this a lie tell me it didn’t begin
Bring us together again
